Clik here to view.Philip Yancey’s writing enjoys prominent standing in my listing of influences. As I say this, I suspect that Phil would question my wisdom to include him in such austere company. (Well, “austere” might be a stretch given the company I actually keep. But, on with the story….)
I’ve read five or six of Phil’s books but the first of his that I read in 1998, “What’s So Amazing About Grace?” had the most impact on me. Although the “current context” ‘of my faith journey had begun many years earlier in 1983, “What’s So Amazing…” shaped my thinking about my own Christian lens relative to the world around me. After having read several others on the topic, the word “Grace” pretty much sums it up. However, that Phil devoted an entire book to the idea also hints are how large the idea of Grace really is.
Now I turn to the task and opportunity “to Blog” (is that a verb or noun?). I throw some thoughts into this virtual space to see if my way of viewing resonates with anyone else out here of the Road. Turning to my friend Phil’s blog to see how he does it, I am both inspired and relieved to find his blog is primarily – words! Simple banner, lots of words, a few pics here and there. Pretty basic. I like it.
So, once again, Phil is sort of my muse. Notice any similarities yet?
Opening Phil’s blog today, I see his latest post is May 12. I’ve read several of his posts. He admits he doesn’t post as often as blogging convention says is necessary. But he is, after all, Philip Yancey. Even as an infrequent blogger, I assume he has lots of followers. His Facebook page has 3,600 likes. Is that a lot? This May 12 post has 12 comments.
So, here’s the score: Philip Yancy, 12, Glenn, ?.
I don’t really know Phil – just what he reveals about himself in his books. And now, in his blog. Just because I love his writing doesn’t mean we’d be friends. But we are brothers in the truest sense – adopted into the “siblinghood “of Christ. So if I strike out as a blogger or even as a person in the greater context of my life, the score that counts the most is the one that Phil and I share and that, for each of us, is the only one that matters.
